Patience Akyianu is the first Ghanaian woman to rise to the position of Managing Director of Barclays Bank Ghana. Patience is a product of Wesley Girls High School. She aced her A-levels and proceeded to the University of Ghana where she read BSc Accounting. She started her career with Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Ltd as Financial Controller from 2001 – 2005. She was subsequently promoted to Senior Credit Analyst and later to Chief Finance Office, all within a short span of 3 years. She made a career move to join Barclays Bank in 2008 as a Financial Director. She spent 5 years in that position before she took over as Acting Managing Director of the Bank in 2013, and 7 months later got confirmed as the substantive MD of the Bank.
What is phenomenal about Patience is that she assumed an enormous responsibility as the caretaker and guardian of her younger siblings at a tender age when she lost her mother. Little did she know her God was grooming her for a bigger task in life. According to her, the core principles she treasures are differentiation, determination and people. Guided by these core principles, she’s held herself to higher standards and that has somehow her meteoric rise in the corporate world dominated by men.
Mrs. Akyianu has received various awards in recognition for her personal contribution to the industry and society: namely Nobles International Award (2013); Africa Female Economic Champion-Banking (Centre for Economic & Leadership Development (CELD)-2014); Induction into Global Women Leaders Hall of Fame (CELD- 2014); and Woman of Excellence in Finance (Ghana CFO Awards 2015). She was also named among the Top-50 Rising Stars in Africa (The Africa Report, May 2014),
