Understanding the trends of the Ghana Job Market

Looking at the current trends of the Ghana job market, it is safe to conclude that the demands of work and the skill set that sustained the industrial revolution in the 18th – 19th Century are no longer largely applicable to running the monstrous multi-complex, robotic blue-chip companies we have today. In fact, in today’s fast-paced and technologically advanced world, job requirements and skill set required for some jobs evolve at a rate of a single decade cycle or in some instances, half a decade. Consequently, classroom curricular and the whole composition of the academia must also evolve at the same rate in order to adequately prepare graduates to meet the flexible demands of the modern workplace.

Unfortunately, the reality on the ground betrays the divorce of classroom tutelage and on the job realities. According to the Ghana Living Standards Survey (2012/2013), only 22.5% of the labour force is employed in the formal sector – public, private and non-governmental organisations and 8.7% are self-employed. Five years from now, over one-third of skills (35%) that are considered important in today’s workforce will have changed. Some of the skills most cherished now might, unfortunately, become less useful in the future.

The World Economic Forum conducted a new Forum report, The Future of Jobs. It sought to look at the employment, skills and workforce strategy for the future. According to World Economic Forum, the future of employment will rest heavily on:

  • Complex Problem-Solving skills
  • Coordinating with Others
  • People Management
  • Critical Thinking
  • Negotiation
  • Quality Control
  • Service Orientation
  • Judgement and Decision Making
  • Active Listening and Creativity
